Aidan I think this is an important issue. As you know I tend to think as a statistician and wonder about some of the problems comparing handicaps across time. I wonder if the average golfer is older now than 10 years ago--the population has aged and…

Hi Aidan. Glad you enjoyed the post. John Daly is not listed in driving stats for 2009 since he has not played in any official PGA events. You could estimate where he would be in the 2009 stats. In his 2007 and 2006 stats his driving distance averag…

Hi Bill. Great post as usual. Your first point is the most significant for me i.e. The top distance driver in the LPGA drives approx the same distance as the average PGA tour player - 283. Pretty awesome striking. As a matter of interest - do you kn…

Good comment Aidan. I would bet that since Appleby was scrambling more, he had shorter putts than Perry and the average number of putts is somewhat misleading.

PGA vs LPGA Tour in Driving Distance

On my last blog post, I looked at the driving averages for the leaders of the PGA and Champions Tour. This exercise showed that the seniors had a relatively modest drop of about 12 yards in average driving distance. Some of the top seniors would rank in the top 20 of the PGA tour in driving distance.

To further examine this issue, I reviewed the recent LPGA driving statistics and again compared them with the PGA tour. Listed below are the top-ranked women in driving distance with there average… Continue

Hi Bill, There is one key stat that I am actually really interested in. This is more to do with handicap golfers. I would be interested to know if there are any reliable stats out there on how much golf handicaps have improved (or not) in recent years. I read somewhere that golf handicaps have only dropped by 0.5 of a stroke in the last ten years, in spite of all the new technology etc. I think this came out of the USGA but was unable to confirm the source. I know this is not actually what you are focused on, but thought you may have some info that you could share. Aidan

Hello Bill,

Great to have you as part of our little (hopefully not for long) golfing community. And your stats are great. I have spoken a lot to Steve Bann (Stuart Appleby's coach) about the value of stats and keeping stats is a key part of his improvement cycle teaching. We might even set up a separate section on Twitr golfers just devoted to stats and maybe you can help us with that. Let us know if you are interested.
Cheers
Aidan
